Hlumani is a global first, corporate social responsibility model in which a successful partnership between government, local communities and the private sector is both designed and implemented. It is Bosasa’s delivery on the Correctional Services White Paper
The uniqueness of the model acknowledges and develops latent talent in a group of individuals (ex offenders) conventionally rejected and stigmatized by society. Because of the difficulties usually experienced in re-integrating offenders back into society once rehabilitated, this project also serves to ease the way for community acceptance and provide evidence of restorative justice.
Local communities are given the benefit of this project through gainful employment and acquisition of sustainable skills, which in turn, benefit nuclear and extended families. This promotes a changed view of the ex-offender who is seen an instrument of positive change to a local micro economy. Skills, raised self esteem, a sense of self sufficiency and healthy nutrition are the by-products of this venture.
Having proved the model as both sustainable and viable from a psycho-social and economic standpoint, Bosasa aims to add the following projects to its CSI portfolio in the coming year:
• Waterval Vegetable Processing Plant
•
Waterval Butchery
•
Ekuseni - Computer (30) Training Facility
•
Crèche for Mothers with Babies in a Correctional
Centre (Johannesburg Females)
•
Feeding impoverished schools in Pollsmoor and
Atteridgeville Area
