The Khayalethu Centre, a Gauteng Department of Social Development initiative, was established in the interest of children and young adults living and working on the streets.
It came to life as a haven of hope and place of safety where destitute children could receive the boost they need for a healthy, safe and productive future. The centre functions as a temporary home where children are equipped with extensive life and vocational skills.
The project aims to reunite children with their families and attempts to assist them to find meaningful employment. Khayalethu used to house both children and adults up to the age of 35. Prevention and early intervention strategies are practiced daily in order to assist young adults who are not in the criminal system. Children were also provided with transport to and from school.
Physical, recreational and cultural projects ensure that Khayalethu Centre was not just a halfway house for faceless people, but a warm and comforting beacon of hope for so many disadvantaged individuals.
The Khayalethu Project received a bronze award from the Premier’s Service Excellence Awards in 2007. This award evaluates programmes on the Principles of Batho Pele (People First) and determines to what extent the project excels in rendering excellent services to the public. Khayalethu and the Department of Social Development received two awards in the categories “The Face of Government” and “Back Office Support” respectively.
